HINTS on searching the Memorials database

Topic of Inquiry Box allows the searching of most fields in the database.
1. Be specific and simple - one word is frequently sufficient (e.g. surname, town name, geographic feature etc.)
NB: If a surname yields too many records - add the given name in the following form: Kelly N* / N* Kelly (the asterisk completes the given name and the forward slash means OR).
2. To search for a group of related people, things, places etc. - use the slash as it means OR (e.g. Dingo* / Dog* )
3. To combine words in a search use the ampersand (eg Hume & Hovell)
4. If more than one word is required - type the phrase (e.g. Poverty Point), or link them with an ampersand (e.g. Ballarat & gold*)
5. Use an asterisk (*) to include all word endings (eg. explor*; goldmi* etc.) or where you are unsure of the spelling
6. Use an exclamation mark to exclude words (e.g. Healesville !Coranderrk)
